  November 20, 2009 www.amazon.com Watch the full interview: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com In the 1990s tensions arose between the native Ogoni people of the Niger Delta and Shell. The concerns of the locals were that very little of the money earned from oil on their land was getting to the people who live there, and the environmental damages caused by Shell's practices. In 1993 the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) organised large protests against Shell and the government, often occupying the refineries. Shell withdrew its operations from the Ogoni areas. The Nigerian government raided their villages and arrested some of the protest leaders. Some of these arrested protesters, Ken Saro-Wiwa being the most prominent, were later executed, against widespread international opposition from the Commonwealth of Nations and human rights organisations. Shell maintained that it asked the Nigerian government for clemency towards those found guilty but that its request was refused. A 2001 Greenpeace report claimed that "two witnesses that accused them later admitted that Shell and the military had bribed them with promises of money and jobs at Shell. Shell admitted having given money to the Nigerian military..." Shell denied these accusations and claimed that MOSOP was an extortionary movement that advocated violence and secession.   Since 2003 militias known as the Janjaweed under orders from the sudanese government have killed over 200000 civilians and another 2.5 million have been forced into refugee camps. In a bid to secure their oil interests inside of sudan and chad, many of the worlds major governments pour weapons and cash into the region and remain passive to the growing carnage allowing the violence to spread further into neighboring chad. Frustrated by the situation, in February 2007 Matt Bowen from Canada and Robert Simental from the US traveled to Eastern Chad. This is the story the captured. Darfur is back in the news again, while American understanding of the situation has not improved. So we felt it a good time to bring this video to our viewers.   Mattafix released their first single "11.30 (Dirtiest Trick in Town)" as a limited edition on Buddhist Punk Records on January 13, 2005. However, the song never charted. Their second single, "Big City Life", was released by EMI on August 8, 2005. It was a considerable hit, managing a number 15 in the United Kingdom and a number 1 in Germany, Poland, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and New Zealand. It also had moderate success in other European countries where it reached the top 20. Their third single, "Passer By", was released on October 24, 2005. However, the single missed the charts in the United Kingdom with a peak at number 79. The single preceded their debut album Signs of a Struggle, which was released a week later. "Passer By" was only released in the United Kingdom and Poland.

  Note: Ivan is available to talk at your school or anywhere else, or to be asked questions at darfurintenminutes@hotmail.com A brief overview of the Darfur conflict from a friend of mine who has spent a considerable amount of time "on the ground" there. The overview describes three of the significant "drivers" that explain what is going on in Darfur, but also show why decreasing the misery is so difficult. The three "drivers" are 1) ethnicity, 2) oil (mostly China, in the ongoing "scramble for Africa"), and 3) desertification/climate change. I hope this overview is helpful. Any informative comments are greatly appreciated. As a personal note, with the Darfur hell so centred around oil, I can't help but think of the Iraq hell, that also began in 2003, and has likely resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians—basically folks like you and me. Don't you just dream of a time when enough people actually say, "No"—and it has meaning? Maybe that time is closer than we know.
