  The CIGNA Falmouth Road Race Challenge essay contest sought to celebrate people who have overcome a life-altering disability or illness, and ask how they have inspired others. This year, Lois Green of East Greenbush, New York, won the all-expense paid trip to run the CIGNA Falmouth Road Race on Sunday, August 15, 2010 in Falmouth, Mass. as a member of Team CIGNA. In her essay, she described her life-changing discovery: lung cancer. She never smoked and no one in her family ever had cancer until that year. Thoracotomy surgery removed half of her left lung, but not her spirit. The doctors told her most patients recover from the surgery in 12 weeks. Lois ran a come-back 5K race after only seven weeks recovering. Soon after, Lois signed on with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's TEAM In Training and planned to run a marathon nine months after surgery with a fundraising commitment of $4000 -- an aggressive goal. She mailed a letter to everyone she knew sharing her story and why she was running. By the time Lois left for the race, she reached $20000 in donations and a pile of the most heart-felt letters she had ever read from friends, family members and even people she never met. Since then, Lois became a mentor for new TEAM in Training team members, ran another marathon, became a TEAM in Training campaign events spokesperson and served on an organizing campaign committee.
