Lewis Faculty share "This I Be...Lewis Universitys Office of Mission, the Lasallian Vocation Council and the Writing Center led an effort on campus that encouraged faculty, staff and students to write their own This I Believe essays describing the core values that guide their daily lives. In addition to those shared on April 8, several essays will be read on April 21 during the second part of the project. On April 8, Lewis University students and faculty shared their This I Believe essays with the University community. Director of Arts and Ideas and professor of English Dr. Michael Cunningham read his essay on The Transforming Power of High School Cross Country. Theology major Kevin Magas read aloud his The Beauty of Nostalgia essay. Brother Armand Alcazar, FSC, associate professor of theology, shared his essay, The Wild Goose Chase. English major Jason Hess read his I Believe in the Power of Language essay. Dr. Laura Sloan, professor of education, shared her essay, I Believe That I Can Make A Difference. Therese Jones, assistant professor of English, shared her essay, The Value of Words and Language. Liberal Arts major Isabel Garcia, Lewis read her I Believe in All My Imperfections essay. And finally, English major Tonya Peterson read her essay entitled, I Used to Believe I Was Going to Hell Until I Actually Died. Board of Trustees 4-29-2010...JCCC Board of Trustees 4-29-2010 Awards and recognition · The JCCC cross country teams had an outstanding season in 2009. The men's team raced to a sixth-place finish at the NJCAA cross country championship and capped the year with a runner-up finish in the NJCAA half-marathon, an event hosted by JCCC. The women's team recorded a top 10 finish in the half-marathon, placing sixth overall. The teams are coached by Mike Bloemker. · The JCCC volleyball team recorded a sixth-place finish in this year's NJCAA national tournament. This was the program's fifth straight appearance at nationals and the 10th overall. The team is coached by Jennifer Ei. · The women's soccer team became the first school from the state of Kansas to qualify for the NJCAA national tournament. In their first appearance, the Lady Cavaliers made it all the way to the championship game, but lost to host Tyler Junior College. JCCC finished the season 19-7-0; those 19 wins tied the school record for a season. Eighteen of the wins were by a shutout, which set a new team record. Goalkeeper Kelly Voigts, who was named the goalkeeper of the national tournament, was credited for all 18 shutouts, tying a national record for a season. [World News]Alex Miroshnichenko is a freelance photojournalist who shared his neighborhood with some nasty wildfires this past week. As a photographer, he naturally snapped shots of the fire in and around his house and community. But he didn't want to try to profit off these photos. This story literally hit close to home.
