  Experimental Laptop Performance: Ab...
  This was one of the final assignments, we had to conceptualize and design a laptop-based piece using only live based input (no pre-recorded samples allowed) which was then manipulated and performed live using Ableton. The additional controller is the APC-40 which hooks directly into the software and allows a far more fluid level of control over the sequencing and effects. The piece was recorded and eventually graded by a panel of moderators; in total there were around 18 performances split over two days. I've included a section from the accompanying essay describing the entire process. "A live software-based performance piece was conceptualized and designed in requirement of this unit; over the course of several weeks I familiarized myself with Ableton Live, and prepared a piece structure which would best reflect my own philosophy. In this case, I decided to present the argument that un-trained musicians could still produce professionally sounding music; regardless of the setting or theme. By manipulating the live input, my intention was to create an overall mood which was reflective of that philosophy, in a genre which in many cases could be referred to as "experimental". My unfamiliarity with using Ableton segued into a decision to limit the overall scope; so as to remain within my own skill set, however a primary goal was to expand my own creative thought process and produce something I was thus far unaccustomed to working with.
